Colours for Keith
Dear Parents and students,
As some of you may know a good friend of mine Keith O’Connor had a very serious accident in Whistler.
Keith moved to Vancouver in late March 2009 and had settled very well in Vancouver and was enjoying life here before this tragic event occurred. In fact Keith had just recently started a new job with a software company downtown which he was very excited about.
It was the final weekend of the Olympic Games and Keith was snowboarding in Lakeside Bowl on Blackcomb Mountain. Keith hit some avalanche debris which was hidden under the snow and was rag dolled down the hill. He broke his back at the T4 level, completely severed his spinal cord, broke both his shoulder blades and perforated his lung with broken ribs. Keith was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital where he underwent lengthy spinal surgery. At VGH, he was lucky to be examined and operated on by the prominent surgeon Dr. Marcel Dvorak. Tragically, due to the extent of his injuries, the Doctor was limited in what he could do, and Keith awoke to find he was paralyzed from the chest down, a condition to which he is still coming to terms with at this time.
On the March 18, 2010 when his lung was deemed to have recovered sufficiently to fly, Keith travelled from Vancouver to Ireland via Frankfurt. He spent about a week in the Mater Public Hospital in Dublin, Ireland before being transferred to the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRC) in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland. His treatment in Vancouver and his flight home were covered by his travel insurance. However, this has exhausted the available funds.
In an effort to raise money to help with Keith’s rehab, equipment and home renovations I would like to do a fundraiser at our school. The children can wear their favourite colours for the “Colours for Keith day” on May 20th. I would be very grateful if each child could donate two dollars on Thursday May 20th for this cause.
Thanking you in advance for your kind support,
Miss Halliden
